I have received, via e-mail from Vintage-Knitting-Patterns.com, this pattern for a knitted baby shawl. I find it beautiful, and, since the pdf-file states permission to forward it, I have decided to share it, and a Spanish translation, with you.

Swallow Tail Shawl/Chal

After much thinking about it, I have finally started a swallowtail shawl from the autumn issue of Interweave Knits. I am going to knit from stash instead of using some yarn with silk content for more drape, as I had previously decided. I am using some pinkish wool lace from handpaintedyarn.com of which I had bought two skeins. But it was not until I wound them into two balls that I realized that they are from different dye lots and, it seems, of different thicknesses!! The first solution was to use two threads, as the pattern calls for, but I did not like the swatch. So I am using the thinner of the skeins single on 3mm needles (I tried 3.5mm, but the stitches were too open for my taste).

Now comes another problem, the resulting Swallowtail Shawl is coming out rather smaller than the original. I have done about 7-8 reps of the second chart and it looks no bigger than a hankie plus there are not instructions in the magazine for a shawl with more repeats so I will have to find my way having seen that the Lily of the Valley pattern has a base of ten stitches (!?). Suggestions welcome.

It is over a month that I haven't posted anything. I have been busy at work and, as far as projects are concerned, most of my time has gone looking for inspiration. Other people's blogs are a good source when one is wondering about what to do next, once she has finished the jobs that have been lying around for a while.

I am nearly done with two, very similar, girl´s cardigans, just lacking buttons and finishing touches. And the last three days (should I say nights? since my knitting usually starts after everybody else has gone to sleep) have gone into a beadless Odessa hat for my daughter.

I have also made a few additions to my mag collection with the purchase of Labores del Hogar (march 2007), Mani di Fata (feb 2007 - still expecting the march issue to arrive at my bookshop), and Ideas y Puntos (march 07) with a beautiful rag doll I intend to make for my daughter and a bunny patchwork american. I am posting pictures of all of these.

PS The jumper in the previous post is from the August/06 issue of Mani di Fata.

Decidedly, I am an occasional knitter; not because I seldom knit (I do, a bit every week), but rather because I only seldom finish a garment. Don't misinterpret me: I do not abandon proyects lying around (well, there is one..., but only one), but I haven't seen something finished since November, when I BO my Icarus Shawl. I have some proyects in mind and this is one, something I want to knit for myself that I expect to start this month of February. It is from an issue of Mani di Fata. I'll try to complete the information.

These are the two things I have recently bought to add to my knitter's paraphernalia. I first got the skein swift from an eBay seller. When I saw it, so nicely decorated with little carnations (so Spanish a flower!) I decided to get also the 'ball egg'? the 'ball ball'? the 'ball case'? I think I like the first name better. Apart from their knitting usefulness, I find them very decorative.

Second try to post something today. The first one had turned out rather nice but this silly computer has been a nuisance for the last few weeks: as slow as hell, it takes about 10 minutes to start; I may have to wait for two or three minutes before any programmes wake up and, then, they collapse. That's what happened to my web browser when I had just finished my previous post a few hours ago. I cannot write the same things again and my mood has changed. :(

Anyway, this week has been dull and so is next week expected to be. Little time to knit and finish projects I am no longer interested in because I want to start something new. I still have some winter patterns in mind although I know the time is coming for summer knitting.

In order to keep my mind off all this and this ugly cold weather, I have taken my shuttles and done a little exercise to brush up the tatting I taught myself last summer and which had lain abandoned most of the autumn and winter. Result: a tatted flower with pattern improvised on the fly. Here is the photo.

tatted flower

This and that ...

Well, Sofia's cardigan wasn't ready in time to be delivered by the Three Wise Men. It nearly did, but in the last moment, I decided I didn't much like the way it was going: I ripped the sleeves (which were nearly complete) and the back and fronts from underarm up. I have to say that it crossed my mind to rip the whole thing. Then, I forgot about it for a couple of days and I am at it again.

modular knitting

The good thing is that I've taught myself to knit a module - yes, only one for the moment. I had seen a scarf in a shop that called my attention. It didn't consist in modules exactly; it was rather done in garter stitch shaped like an arrow. I might have seen modular knitting before in afghans and jackets but had not paid much attention to it since I am more a monochromatic knitter. However, while searching the internet for something that looked a bit like the afore mentioned scarf, I came across some fantastic multicoloured designs and garments. I searched a bit further and found some free patterns -not as many as you can find of other techniques- and books. So I have knitted my first square (whose technique may very well be adapted for a scarf like the one I'd seen) and ordered a book : Modular Knits by Iris Schreier.

My third comment is for the january issue of Mani di Fata. I find the knitting projects a bit disappointing this time. I have to say that I have a love-hate relationship with this magazine. Sometimes, I tell myself that I should stop buying it, but I don't. I find it somewhat expensive considering that I doesn't usually offer the patterns of the embroidery works it shows, neither tells you which number colors of Mouliné cotton have been used. No, you have to buy the pattern and, only then, you will know the rest. You can also buy the pattern (or the whole kit) on-line but, in that case, you will have to order the magazine for the instructions. Most part of it is a catalogue of the shop (Canetta) that also publishes the magazine. Nevertheless, the pictures are BEAUTIFUL and the wonderful projects leave me open-mouthed. I have to say that there is an extra drawback when you order on-line from out of Italy: the Italian post is so expensive, you cannot expect to pay less than 30€ for any order. As for the knitting and crocheted proposals, yes, you will find all the explanations and patterns although the yarn is always Canetta's own. Unfortunately, this month, I don't find any knitted things that fit my style. Pity! Some other day I will take pictures of the material I ordered from them. For the moment, here is this is the present issue cover.

Back to school. Stop knitting

This has been my first week at work after the 15-day Christmas holiday. It was good to meet the workmates again, wish them a happy new year and comment on our vacation, but we were all slightly depressed and not willing to start work precisely. It was more or less the same for the pupils; lively is not the word to describe them on the first day of classes this new year.
January is, nevertheless, going to be a tough month with exams in the last week. So plenty of marking work running into February, which means little time to knit. Buaaaaaaaah.

My husband will be happy with this, since he looks slightly annoyed when he sees me knitting. He says there are better things to do as he usually prefers to spend his spare time outdoors. However ... he has mentioned the need of a sleeveless cardigan and, well, he wouldn't mind a scarf, either, as long as it is not wool because he feels wool is itchy against his skin. So if any of you know some wintry yarn without wool that you like, please, leave a message. I would really appreciate your suggestions.

I sometimes tell him how in other countries, not in Spain, as far as I know, there are men who knit do it wonderfully well. My favorite is brooklyntweed; I've shown DH his blog, pictures and knitting projects. And do you know what? DH likes some of those things too and wouldn't mind, I infere, a Scholar Collar or his Shifting Sands scarf (by Grumperina) in his wardrobe!!! Incidentally, if you have not had a look at brooklyntweed for a while, don´t miss his latest addition: the afore mentioned Scholar Collar, absolutely gorgeous.

Coming back / Viaje de vuelta

We have just returned from Madrid, where we spent New Year's Eve at my father-in-law's. Part of the family were missing this year: my DH's sister from Galicia didn't come this time because they need the time to move house (they are renting an appartment while the flat they have bought is finished); his brother spent the night at his wife's family, but, before, they came with their two kids, who my daughter adores, to exchange Christmas presents. The children went mad playing with their new toys.
We have come back today and stopped at Plenilunio to do some shoppings on the way back. I found a stall at a shopping centre selling typical handcrafted items from different countries. I got these two wooden boxes made of pine-tree wood and handpainted in Colombia. I asked the shop assistant whether they were usually there or just for the Christmas period. The first is true, so I may go back for some other presents later on in the year.
(Sorry, I'm a terrible photographer)

1. dis, 4d, C1, 1d, h, 2d (quedan 110 p)
2. md,5d, h, 2d, (99)
3. dis, 5d, h, 2d
4. md, 4d, h, 2d (88)
5. dis, 3d, C1, h, 2d
6. md, 3d, h, 2d (77)
7. dis, 3d, h, 2d
8. md, 2d, h, 2d (66)
9. dis, 2d, h, 2d
10. md, 1d, h, 2d (55)
11. dis, 1d, h, 2d
12. md, h, 2d, (44)
13. dis, 2d (33)
14. dis, 1d (22)
15. dis (11)

Curly scarf ...

Here is a pic of Sofia´s cardigan. It is worked in seed and stockinette stitches. The back and one front are finished. This is the left front after frogging when it had reached almost its two thirds. Why? I start with 3 1/2 mm needles and then I change to 4 mm needles. While knitting, I noticed something different between this front and the other but could not say exactly what until I realized I had been working with 4 1/2mm needles. Stupid me!

I am also posting a picture of my last achievement: crocheted boa, also called ruffled scarf or spiral scarf on the net. Because I love the look of it, I have signed up for the curlywhirlies KAL --I don't know whether I have been accepted yet. Don't ask me about the yarn. I used some leftovers of I-dont-know-what. It's cent per cent acrylic but looks like mohair. I am not very sure about how well it will wash.

Sofia's cardigan + virus threat

I started Sofia's (6) cardigan. I haven't been knitting a lot lately but I still hope to have it ready for Christmas. I have finished the back and one front is almost done. It has been impossible for me to take any pictures of it in daylight and it may still have to wait for another coupple of days.

Most of my time has been wasted trying to get rid of a Trojan in my computer. My antivirus programme was able to detect it and isolate it, but it was impossible both for the programme and me to delete the infected file. I found some information on the internet on how to completely get rid of it by deleting files and entries in the registry. However I am not completely sure it has disappeared for good. My notebook is not working as it should... but, at least, I can get connected to the web.

SP Hola.

Icarus finished

blocking

Well, here it is. Finished. I have finally completed my Icarus shawl and I am so pleased with myself. I have really enjoyed knitting it, which was, incidentally, my first shawl, first lace project and first blocking. I love the result so much that I have been trying it in front of the mirror the whole day: before hiding the wool ends, before blocking, after blocking, on trousers and jumper, on an overcoat... I have already started to miss the project and thought about starting the second. But I must be a sensible girl and finish other things first. I must confess I am the sort of person who starts a knitting project just for the fun of it although I set myself some 'loose' targets and I think "Well, it does not really matter if it takes me another couple of months". But then, once I have started, I begin to feel the necessity to knit quickly and see the garment finished.

These two pictures were taken before blocking. After 'blocage' it measures 180x85 cm.

Knitting Icarus has taken me about a month. I work out and look after my two-year old daughter, which leaves very little spare time. So I have been staying up late to enjoy some lonely knitting. The problem is that I have been feeling quite sleepy during the day lately.
Next projects:
- I have to finish Sofia´s cardigan for Christmas. I've hadly started it.
- I want to make a sleeveless cardi for my daughter. I have 1 1/2 balls of soft green yarn.
- I want to knit a stole or scarf in one of the leafy patterns I have been trying lately.
- I have to finish the table runner in ' punto Assissi" (cross stitch) that I showed in a previous post.

...slow progress

I've satarted rep 4 of chart1 and intend to finish it during the weekend. After that, I'll put Icarus in its cage for a while (yes, another project awaiting).

Today, I've bought some yarn to knit a cardigan for Sofía, who is 7 years old, very tall and thin. I expect to be able to finish this work for Christmas as this will be her present, together with some toy or book if nothing more original comes to my mind in the meantime. We celebrate Epyphany here, so I may have all the Christmas holidays to finish the cardi.

The yarn is Comfort from Lanas Stop. The pattern... I haven't decided yet. I'll have a look at some magazines for inspiration

Icarus KAL

tatted edging Well, I finally started knitting Icarus on Monday and, at the moment, I am on the 2nd rep of chart 1, which I plan to finish tomorrow. As the rows quickly get considerably long, plans are to finish rep 3 this week.

I have signed up for the Icarus KAL and posted a picture of my Icarus' still-short wings. This is my first shawl and the first time I feel knitting is something more social --should I say 'global'?-- than private and I love it.

In the meantime, two other projects will have to wait unfinished. One is a tatted edging for a small tablecloth (see pic above); the other, a table runner in 'punto Assisi' (a combination of cross and back stitches), whose materials and pattern I bought from Mani di fata

I have also decided to keep track of my Icarus progress on a sheet done for this purpose where I mark the reps I have finished. If anyone is interested, you can download the pdf file here.

A thought

I have been collecting needlework magazines for about 2-3 years now and I often see so many things I would like to find the time to do. I also admire, and secretly envy, those knitters whose blogs quickly fill up with wonderful garments. They have made me interested in lace knitting and lace knitted shawls. Surfing the net I get the impression knitting is not at all old fashioned. I had that impression because I don’t know any other person who knits; there are not so many yarn shops in my town as there used to be and they are not so busy, either. I have difficulties in finding some yarns and notions. But you surf the net, and there they are: knitters of all ages and nationalities, who make me feel comfortably accompanied.

Icarus under way

While Emma was still a baby I also gave embroidery a try. After seeing the perfectly embroidered projects in Mani di fata and its attractive visual lessons I embarked myself in a not-very-difficult cot cover. I enlarged a design with two amorous elephants that came in one of the transfer sheets of the magazine. Doing the elephants in stem stitch was ok. But the satin stitch flowers took me a long time. The result is far from perfect but quite acceptable, I believe, as a first-time embroidery project. (See photo in previous post, the one with the booties)

Incidentally, after much consideration, I have finally made up my mind as for yarn and model and started to knit Icarus Shawl in Rich Earth lace wool (skein on the right) from handpaintedyarn. The other colours are, from left to right, Dusty and Bergamota.

Baby things

Once my daughter was born, I had to do something nice for her. Some mothers and grannies knit a whole set of clothes and things before the baby is born. But I had done nothing as I didn’t have much time and felt quite tired the last months of pregnancy. I found some lovely booties in a Mani di fata issue I had around. I had to make a quite a few changes to the pattern because the explanations produced a very big boot, large enough for a 3-year-old. I used thinner needles (2.5 mm) and I also cast on fewer stitches and did fewer rows in some parts. At the beginning I had decided to do without the embroiderd flower because I am not good at embroidery but later I decided to give it a try and see what happened. I liked it and here is the result. I used Copito from Lanas Stop. I still have 1 ½ balls balls left, which I am planning to turn into a sleeveless cardigan for my daughter.

A start

I hadn’t knitted anything since I left university 20 years ago. That is a long time; long enough to lose a lot of practice I had gained. I decided to take up knitting and crochet again when I got pregnant and the doctor advised me to stay in bed for a few months. Reading was ok, but it began to be tedious when it was almost the ONLY thing I could do the whole day. Then I thought of knitting, but the needles felt a bit awkward in bed. Crochet, however, was much comfortable to use since you dont need so much space around you to move it. So I took out some mags and crocheted a doily.
