I am half way through the warm schoolboy I found in Ideas y Puntos. It is a kind of embroidered pillow doll made on cotton fabric and filled with synthetic fiber. I transferred the pattern with pencil and now some of the lines have faded so much I am no longer able to see them properly. Aghhhhhhhhhhhh!

SP Tengo a medias el colegial abrigadito de Ideas y Puntos. Es un muñeco almohada bordado sobre tela de algodón y relleno de fibra sintética. Pasé el dibujo con lápiz y algunas de las líneas han medio desaparecido y ya casi no las veo. Tendré que repasarlas y lo odiooooooooo.

I have learnt via Nadine that there is a new on-line knitting magazine in Spanish: Tejemanejes. The first issue is on with some interesting patterns and a contest where some kits can be won for some of the projects on the home page.

Romantic Style / Estilo Romántico (punto y ganchillo)

Jennie Atkinson's Romantic Style. Knits and Crochet to Wear and Display has just arrived and I love it. I find it simply wonderful and there is hardly anything that I wouldn't like to knit (or crochet). I read somebody (sorry, I don't remember who now) saying some of the projects were not useful and maybe they were right as they were talking about the Dressing Gown. I agree, it is not useful as a dressing gown, but if I were to knit it, which, incidentally, must take ages, I would use a different yarn and put it on to go to the opera. ;)

SP Acabo de recibir Romantic Style. Knits and Crochet to Wear and Display de Jennie Atkinson, y me encanta todo. No hay casi nada que no quisiera tejer (o hacer con ganchillo). Prácticamente todas las propuestas me parecen maravillosas. Leí no recuerdo dónde que alguien decía que algunos de los proyectos no eran prácticos refiriéndose especialmente al Dressing Gown (bata para andar por casa). Estoy de acuerdo en que no es práctica como bata. Si yo tejiera una cosa así, lo que me llevaría años, usaría una lana o hilo distintos y me la pondría para ir a la ópera. ;)

Bitten by the sewing bug / El gusanillo de la costura

Hi. I've recently been bitten by the sewing bug. I've hardly sewn anything in my life: as far as I can remember I did a blind for my old flat and sewed the hems of a cot cover for my daughter shortly after she was born and... that's it.

I have an old Singer (no free-arm) that sews faster than I can control -no use to apply less strength to the pedal, as it will stop completely- and that hasn't come out of its case for quite a long time. A technician told me that for about 40-50€ he could fit a new smoother engine more sensitive to the pedal. And, yes, why not, I may take it to him and see what happens.

In the meantime, I have bought myself two books about 'simple sewing". One is Céline Dupuy's Simple Sewing with a French Twist and the other Lotta Jansdotter's Simple sewing. The titles are not misleading but I find most of the projects in both books slightly too simple but perfect for the complete novice. Not that they are not beautiful or interesting but I would expect some of the proposals to go a little bit further, perhaps. Both have patterns and clear step-by-step drawn diagrams but there is some repetion of objects to make: cushions, duvets, aprons. I love the hats, the sandals and slippers, some bags and, especially, the organizers.

If I had to rate them, I would give both books 5 points out of 5 on the beautiful appearance of the books; and for the projects and explanations 3.5 for Lotta´s work and 4 for Céline (this one has more and more varied projects)

SP Hola. Últimamente me ha entrado el gusanillo de la costura. No he cosido casi nada en mi vida: que recuerde, un estor para mi antiguo piso y los dobladillos de una colcha para la cuna de mi hija. Nada más.

Tengo una máquina Singer (sin brazo libre) que va tan rápido que no la sigo (y no vale de nada levantar algo el pie del pedal, porque, entonces se para del todo) y que no ha salido del maletín en mucho tiempo. Un técnico me dijo que podía cambiarme el motor por unos 40-50€ y ponerle uno más sensible a la presión del pedal. Y, sí, puede que le lleve la máquina a ver.

Mientras tanto, me he comprado un par de libros de 'costura fácil'. Uno es Simple Sewing with a Frech Twist de Céline Dupuy, y, el otro, Simple Sewing de Lotta Jansdotter. Los títulos no son nada engañosos pero encuentro que la mayoría de las propuestas son un pelín demasidado simples aunque perfectas para novatas. No es que no sean bonitas o interesantes, solo que yo esperaría que alguna de las labores fuera un poquito más lejos. Los dos libros tienen patrones y diagramas dibujados para seguir las instrucciones paso a paso, pero los proyectos se repiten un poco: varios cojines, varios edredones, varios delantales... No obstante me encantan los gorros, las sandalias y zapatillas, algunas bolsas, y, sobretodo, los organizadores.

Si tuviera que puntuarlos daría a los dos 5 puntos sobre 5 por la bonita presentación y apariencia de los libros en sí mismos; y por los proyectos y explicaciones. 3.5 al trabajo de Lotta y 4 al de Céline (éste tiene más y más variadas propuestas).

Gorgeous free patterns on the net / Preciosos patrones gratuitos en la red

I have already left somewhere in my blog a couple of free patterns that can be found on the Internet: I am talking about Grumperina's Odessa Hat, and the Baby Shawl from Vintage-Knitting-Patterns.

Grumperina has a few more and you can sign up with Vintage-Knitting-Patterns to receive them in your e-mail.

Apart from those, I am thinking of some gorgeous shawls I have recently, or not so recently, seen here and there and whose instructions can be downloaded from free. The first is the oft knitted Flower Basket Shawl from Interweave.

The others are found at Finnish blog sites like the Pavonis-huivi at Neuleunia (look for the link to the pdf file in the right column); the Terttu-huivi at Lankakomero; and my three favourites by Mielitty called Liisan lilja -huivi, Kellokukka -huivi and Onnenlehti -huivi (these links will open a PDF file). Although the explanations are in Finninsh (no, I can't read Finnish) they are charted.

Grumperina tiene algunos patrones más y os podéis apuntar a Vintage-Knitting-Patterns para recibir algún otro en vuestro correo.

Aparte de estos, también estoy pensando en algunos chales muy bonitos que he visto recientemente aquí y allá y cuyas instrucciones pueden bajarse gratis. El primero, y super-conocido es el Flower Basket Shawl de Interweave.

I no longer trust the mail / Ya no me fío del correo

I used to have faith and trusted the usual efficiency of the mail service. But no more. Several things have got lost lately - both things sent and to receive. Small parcels or envelopes containing something more than just a sheet of paper never reached their destination. Isn't that something more than a coincidence? I am furious because 1.- the latest Norah Jones Not too late, which was a present for my sister 2.- the spring issue of Interweave KNITS and 3.- a sample of Lavender Wet Wipes have gone missing. Now I am worried about any other things I order by mail may follow the same route. I think I am going paranoid.

SP Solía confiar en el servicio de correos y su eficacia. Nunca se había perdido nada. Pero ya no es así. Recientemente me han perdido varios envíos. Son paquetes pequeños o sobres que contienen algo más que el simple papel de una carta y que no han llegado a su destino. ¿No es coincidencia? Además estoy que echo las muelas porque 1) el último
CD de Norah Jones, Not too late, que compré para regalar a mi hermana; 2) el número de primavera de Interweave KNITS (aaagh); y 3) unas muestras comerciales de toallitas de lavanda se han desvanecido. Ahora me preocupa que cualquier cosa que compre por correo lleve el mismo destino. Me estoy volviendo paranoica.
