Size
Without stretching, the hat in the pictures has a diametre of 55cm and a depth of 22cm. It stretches enough for a head diametre of about 58-60cm.
Materials
1 ball of Stop Astun (55% acrylic, 45% wool); 100gr/85m.4.5mm and 5mm dpns or circulars, or the size necessary to get the gauge. (NOTE: I always need much smaller needle sizes than recommended)
A tapestry needle. A stitch marker.
Stitches used
Stockinette stitch worked in the round: knit all rows.
Seed stitch:
on an even number of stitches:1st row: *knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from *.
2nd row: *purl 1, knit 1. Repeat from *Repeat these two rows.
Gauge
With larger needles and stockinette st: 12sts x 20 rows = 10x10cm
Directions
On 4.5mm dpns or circulars, cast on 56 stitches, join in the round paying attention not to twist the stitches; place marker for the beginning of the row. Work 14 rows in seed stitch.Change to larger needles and work 14 rows in stockinette or until hat measures 11 to 13 cm from the beginning.
Start decreases as follows:
1st row: *knit 6, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
2nd and all even rows: knit.
3rd row: *knit 5, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
5th row: *knit 4, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
7th row: *knit 3, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
9th row: *knit 2, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
11th row: *knit 1, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
12th row: *knit 2 together. Repeat from *.
Finishing:
Cut wool leaving some length. With tapestry needle, pass this length through the 6 remaining stitches and pull to close.
Pass wool inside hat and weave in end.
