Interweave Knits Spring 2009

I have just learnt that the spring 09 issue of Interweave Knits is out. I loooove a lot of its projects, which makes up for my slight disappointment with the winter issue. The problems are: a) I won´t have time to knit everything I like b) I can't wait to get my subscription copy.

In the meantime I will share my selection with you.

The one in the top left is definitely a must for many reasons: I have a soft spot for cross-over, cache-coeur, kimono-style cardigans; that colour is one of my favourites. My husband says I am very likely to love that kind of purple, no matter how beautiful or ugly the item is, but, in this case you will agree that the item is GORGEOUS, won't you? The design is Connie Chang Chinchio's, who has in me an inconditional admirer.

SP Me acabo de enterar de que ha salido el número de primavera 2009 de Interveave Knits y me encanta. Esto compensa algo la ligera decepción del número de invierno, pero tiene algún problema: a) que no voy a tener tiempo de hacerme todo lo que me gusta; y b) que me muero de impaciencia por recibir mi revista.

Mientras tanto os dejo aquí la selección de algunos, sólo algunos, de los proyectos que me gustan.

Seguro que haré el de arriba a la izquierda (Silk Cocoon Cardigan) por varias razones: me chiflan las chaquetas cruzadas y ese es uno de mis colores favoritos. Mi marido dice que si algo es de ese púrpura, me gusta seguro, independientemente de que lo demás sea bonito o feo. En este caso, estareis de acuerdo en que es PRECIOSO. ¿A que sí? El diseño es de Connie Chang Chinchio's, de quien ya soy una incondicional.

FO: Just Enough Ruffles Scarf/

Pattern: Just Enough Ruffles from cosmicpluto. It´s funny, easy and the result is great (better than the picture, promise).

Wool: three 50-gram balls of Katia Tibet in blue.

Needles: 4.5mm. Started with straights, because I knit faster with them, and finished with 120cm circs to accommodate the huge amount of stitches you get after the increases. BO with 5mm to give the edge more elasticity.

BTW, I used my brand new set of KnitPicks circulars, which I ordered from Tira del Ovillo after I read this post in los escenarios de tu vida (Luisilla, thanks a lot for the information)

SP Modelo: Just Enough Ruffles de cosmicpluto. Es divertido, fácil y el resultado genial (mucho mejor que en la foto, os lo prometo)

Lana: 3 ovillos de 50 gr de Katia Tibet azul.

Agujas de 4.5mm. Comencé con agujas rectas porque voy más deprisa, y después cambié a circulares de 120 cm para acomodar todos los puntos que quedan después de los aumentos. Cerré con agujas de 5 mm para dar elasticidad al borde.

Por cierto, estrené el juego de agujas circulares de KnitPicks que pedí a Tira del Ovillo cuando me enteré por este post de los escenarios de tu vida de que las vendían en España (mil gracias, Luisilla, te debo una).

ON and OFF

Just an update of my december knitting progress.

1.- The DROPS slippers are just finished. I used a ball of Stop Aspen I had bought for a hat, but the colour wasn't very convincing. I went to the shop to find another ball in a contrasting colour but there was nothing left as my lys is closing down this month. Nothing from stash matched, either. So the whole slippers were knit in this dull beige with no option to play with this funny pattern. I have to admit being a bit puzzled as to how to 'mount' the slipper once all its squares were finished. It took me a while to work it out. The second time was much, much faster.They are going to be a Christmas present for my sister. While I am modelling for the picture, I find that they are quite comfortable and very warm.

2.- A DROPS (again) A-shaped cardigan for my daughter, knit in less than 4 balls of Stop Astun is almost over just short of one sleeve, which needs sewing. I still have over one ball left, which may become a matching hat.

3.- An Icarus Shawl (by Miriam Felton) is under way as a present for my mother. This is my second and knit exactly like the first one as my mum often says how much she likes the model, the wool and the colour. Knit in Lace Wool from handpaintedyarn.com yarn on 3.5mm needles.

4.- Not started yet: a hat for a cousin. For this one I will use one of the balls of Stop Astún in off-white that remained after my DROPS A-shaped jacket.

SP Puesta a día de mis progresos tricoteros de diciembre.

1.- Zapatillas de DROPS, recién terminadas. He usado un ovillo de Stop Aspen que compré para un gorro, pero no me llegó a convencer el color. Fuí a por otro ovillo para combinar, pero no quedaba ninguno ya que la tienda cierra este mes y no están reponiendo, claro. Entre las reservas de casa tampoco había nada adecuado así que las hice enteras en este beis tan soso sin posibilidad que jugar con los cuadraditos del patrón. ¡Con lo que me hubiera gustado! Admito que estuve bastante desorientada cuando llegó la hora de "montar" la zapatilla una vez tuve todos los cuadros. Me llevó un rato hasta que resolví el puzle. Pero la segunda vez fue mucho más fápida. Las zapatillas son un regalo de Navidad para mi hermana y, mietras poso con ellas para la foto me estoy dando cuenta de lo cómodas y calentitas que son.

2.- Chaqueta Trapecio de DROPS (otra vez) para mi hija, hecha (la chaqueta, claro) con menos de 4 ovillos de Stop Astún en azul claro. Sólo me queda coserle una manga. Con las sobras le haré un gorro a juego.

3.- El Chal Ícarus (de Miriam Felton) está ya a medias y va a ser un regalo para mi madre. Es el segundo que hago y va a ser exactamente igual, ya que mi madre comenta a menudo lo bonito que es y cómo le gusta el color. Lana Lace Wool de handpaintedyarn.com y agujas de 3.5mm.

4. Sin empezar: un gorro para mi prima. Usaré uno de los ovillos de Stop Astún color crudo que me quedaron de mi anterior chaqueta.

Just off the needles / Calentito

After lying around for about ten days in need of sewing and buttons, the A-shaped cardigan (from DROPS) was finished last week. In fact it is a quick knit in such bulky yarn as Stop Astún (it seems I do not knit with anything else lately). I like wearing it as it is really warm. I made something between xs and s, and knitted it longer. I also made a longer neck for extra warmth. However, I find the cuffs too wide. Too loose. I should have cast on fewer stitches. I might have also been a good idea to knit fronts and back in one piece, but I didn't have such a long circular of 5.5mm, which is what I have done it with.

SP Ha estado por ahí tirada diez días esperando costuras y botones, pero al final acabé la semana pasada la chaqueta trapecio de DROPS. En realidad, se hace enseguida con una lana tan gruesa como es la Stop Astún (parece que últimamente no trabajo con otra cosa, pero por aquí hay poco donde elegir). Es agradable de llevar, y muy calentita. Hice una talla intermedia entre la xs y s y añadí longitud. También agrandé el cuello para que abrigara más. Los puños me quedan algo anchos y muy flojos. Creo que debería haber echado menos puntos. Igualmente, hubier simo buena idea hacer los delanteros y la espalda al mismo tiempo, pero no tengo una aguja de 5.5mm tan larga como para acomodar todos los puntos.

Basic Adult´s Hat

Remember this hat from last year? It is quite easy to knit on circulars or dpns. Here are the instructions in English. (errata corrected 14 Feb 2013).



Size

Without stretching, the hat in the pictures has a diametre of 55cm and a depth of 22cm. It stretches enough for a head diametre of about 58-60cm.

Materials

1 ball of Stop Astun (55% acrylic, 45% wool); 100gr/85m.4.5mm and 5mm dpns or circulars, or the size necessary to get the gauge. (NOTE: I always need much smaller needle sizes than recommended)

A tapestry needle. A stitch marker.

Stitches used

Stockinette stitch worked in the round: knit all rows.

Seed stitch:

on an even number of stitches:1st row: *knit 1, purl 1. Repeat from *.

2nd row: *purl 1, knit 1. Repeat from *Repeat these two rows.

Gauge

With larger needles and stockinette st: 12sts x 20 rows = 10x10cm

Directions

On 4.5mm dpns or circulars, cast on 56 stitches, join in the round paying attention not to twist the stitches; place marker for the beginning of the row. Work 14 rows in seed stitch.Change to larger needles and work 14 rows in stockinette or until hat measures 11 to 13 cm from the beginning.

Start decreases as follows:

1st row: *knit 6, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

2nd and all even rows: knit.

3rd row: *knit 5, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

5th row: *knit 4, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

7th row: *knit 3, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

9th row: *knit 2, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

11th row: *knit 1, knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

12th row: *knit 2 together. Repeat from *.

Finishing:

Cut wool leaving some length. With tapestry needle, pass this length through the 6 remaining stitches and pull to close.
Pass wool inside hat and weave in end.

Gorro para adulto - fe de erratas

Si copiásteis las instrucciones para el gorro antes del 10 de noviembre, tened en cuenta que la muestra se consigue con 12 puntos x 20 vueltas en punto jersey con agujas de 5mm (no con las de 4.5mm).

Si me visitáis de vez en cuando, tal vez recordéis uno de los gorros que hice el año pasado. Tuvo bastante éxito y tuve que hacer alguno más para regalar. La factura es bastante sencilla y adecuada incluso para principiantes. Si queréis hacerlo para hombre, se puede sustituir la parte hecha a punto de arroz, por punto musgo (todas las vueltas del derecho) o por elásticos.

Estas son las instrucciones de un gorro básico para adulto trabajado con agujas circular o de doble punta. Tiene una franja de punto de arroz y, el resto, está hecho a punto jersey. Yo suelo utilizar un grosor de aguja bastante más pequeño que el recomendado en la etiqueta, así que, puede ser que necesitéis un número bastante mayor que el mío para conseguir adaptar la muestra

Medidas
Sin estirar, el gorro de la foto tiene 55 cm de diámetro y 22 cm de profundidad. Estira lo suficiente para un contorno de cabeza de hasta 58-60 cm.

Materiales

1 ovillo de lana Stop Astún (55% acrílica, 45% lana); 100 gr/85m Agujas de doble punta (o circulares) de 4.5mm y 5mm, o del grosor necesario para conseguir la muestra.Una aguja de tapicería

Puntos empleados

Punto jersey trabajado en redondo: todas las vueltas del derecho.

Punto de arroz: sobre un número de puntos pares:1ª vta: *1 derecho, 1 revés. Repetir desde *.2ª vta: *1 revés, 1 derecho. Repetir desde *. Repetir estas dos vueltas.

Muestra

Con agujas de 5mm a punto de jersey:12 puntos x 20 vueltas = 10x10cm.

Instrucciones

Con agujas de doble punta (o circular) de 4.5mm montar 56 puntos, unir en redondo con cuidado de no retorcer los puntos y colocar un marcador para señalar el comienzo de la vuelta. Trabajar 14 vueltas a punto de arroz.Cambiar a las agujas de 5mm. y trabajar a punto jersey 14 vueltas o hasta obtener unos 11 a 13 cm desde el comienzo.

Comenzar las disminuciones como sigue:
1ª Vta:*6 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.
2ª vta y todas las pares: al derecho.
3ª vta: 5 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.

5ª vta: 4 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.

7ª vta: 3 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.

9ª vta: 2 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.

11ªvta: 1 derecho, 2 juntos derecho. Repetir desde *.

12ª vta: *2 juntos der. Repetir desde *.

Terminación

Cortar la lana dejando cierta longitud. Con una aguja de tapicería, pasar este cabo por los 6 puntos restantes y tirar para cerrar; meterlo hacia adentro y rematar.

Printed Silk Cardigan

This is my finished Printed Silk Cardigan from Interweave Knits Spring 08. I started it in Katia Siesta, which, I considered, was the perfect yarn for a luxury cardi. However, I hadn't knitted more than a couple of inches, when the first 50gr. ball was over. This is a discontinued yarn that I bought in Madrid and there was hardly any chance of getting any more than the 8 balls I have, so I found another yarn: Stop Ibiza. It has a history since it has been in my stash for about 20 years! but so far I hadn't been able to find a project for it.
I have used under four 100gr. balls on 2.5 and 3mm needles. I cast on fewer stitches than recommended for the smallest size and that was ok for the bust although the lower body was too narrow and I had to stretch it while blocking. Apart from that, the other changes I've made is a knit hem to prevent it from curling like mad, and the fake tubular bind off for the neckband (instead of the recommended sewn BO).

What I have learnt or done for the first time:

• the 3-Stitch One-Row Buttonhole
• tubular CO
• three-needle BO for the shoulders
• sewn bind off (which I finally didn't use)
• fake tubular bind off

If I were to knit another one (which I may, because the pattern is gorgeous), I would

• knit the fronts and back in one piece in order to avoid so much sewing;
• place the last buttonhole in the neckband, not the front band;
• make front bands shorter, may be with short rows, as the tips are a little longer than the rest even though I knitted the 1x1 rib tighter;
• knit the whole front bands together with the rest of the front to avoid sewing;
• pick up fewer stitches for neater neck line. It turned out a bit curly. That's the reason why I chose another way to bind off more tightly;
• CO the stitches for the sleeves on both thinner needles and waste yarn. This border tends to give in a little bit.

SP Esta es mi "Chaqueta de Seda Estampada" del número de Primavera 08 de Interweave Knits. La comencé con Katia Siesta, que me parecía la lana perfecta para una chaqueta de lujo. No obstante, no llevaba ni 5cm cuando se me acabó el primer ovillo. Sólo tengo 8, que compré en Madrid y que ya han dejado de fabricar. Prácticamente imposible hacerse con más. Así que busqué otro hilo: Stop Ibiza. Este tiene su historia porque hará más de 20 años que lo tengo, pero hasta ahora no había encontrado ninguna labor en la que usarlo.

He gastado unos 4 ovillos de 100 gramos y agujas de 2.5 y 3 mm. Monté menos puntos de los recomendados para la talla más pequeña (S) y ha resultado bien para el pecho, pero no para la parte inferior, que quedó algo estrecha y tuve que estirarla en el hormado. Aparte de esto, los cambios han consistido en hacer un dobladillo para que las piezas no se enroscaran como locas, y el falso cierre tubular para la tira del escote (en vez de cerrarlo con aguja de coser, como recomendaba la revista).

Qué he aprendido o practicado por primera vez

• el ojal de tres puntos en una vuelta
• el montado tubular
• el cierre con tres agujas para los hombros
• el cierre cosido ( que al final no usé)
• el falso cierre tubular

Si hiciera esta chaqueta otra vez --lo que no descarto, porque me encanta este modelo--

• haría espalda y delanteros de una pieza;
• colocaría el último ojal en la tira del escote, no en la del delantero;
• haría las tiras de los delanteros más cortas, quizá con vueltas cortas, ya que las puntas cuelgan un poco, aunque intenté hacer los puntos del elástico 1x1 más prietos que el resto;
• haría toda la tira pegada al delantero, para no tener que coserla luego;
• cogería menos puntos para el escote. Me salió demasiado flojo y usé el falso cierre tubular para apretar los puntos un poco más;
• montaría los puntos de la manga con agujas y lana auxiliar bastante más finas. Parece que los puños tienden a abrirse un poco.

Materials
a skein of lace wool
3.5mm needles

Directions
Loosely Cast On 63 stitches.
Follow the diagram, starting with the first stitch of row 1.
Only the odd rows are represented; knit all even rows (garter stitch).
Repeat the motif as many times as desired, ending in row 21 or 41.
Then, work the last 12 rows in the diagram.
Bind off all stitches quite loosely and block.

Echarpe Lavandin (Español)

Hola. No han sido "poquísimos días" como prometí en el post anterior, sino unos cuantos más. Os pido mil disculpas si es que alguna estaba pendiente, pero ahora mismo estoy hasta las cejas de trabajo. He hecho un huequito para poner la traducción al español del Echarpe Lavandin de Dodile, a quien agradezco su permiso para traducir y publicar su patrón. No os olvidéis de echarle un vistazo al resto de sus modelos, algunos gratuitos , y todos preciosos.

Instrucciones

Montar 63 puntos bastante flojos. Seguir el esquema empezando por el primer punto de la vuelta 1.

Sólo están representadas las vueltas impares; tejer las pares al derecho (a punto musgo). Repetir el motivo tantas veces como queramos y acabar en la vuelta 21 o 41.

A continuación, hacer las 12 últimas vueltas del gráfico.Cerrar los puntos bastante flojos y hormar.

Unsuccessful knitting/ Fracaso tricotero

Hi. It's almost three months that I haven't blogged. Not that there was nothing to say, but rather that time was short, work overwhelming and stress took over. In all this time I did some knitting, some shopping for stash and then work, work, work, stress, work and take a holiday to recover.

In chunks:

• Last march/april I discovered a wool shop in Leganés (Madrid). My sister-in-law's sister-in-law (phew!) told me about this shop near her home and DH took me there in one of our visists to Madrid. Although it didn't have all I wanted (bamboo, for instance), it has many wools by Katia and Lanas Stop. I got some balls of Katia Siesta and Katia Bahia at a reduced price because both have been discontinued (see pics). If anyone is interested in visiting it, the shop is Lanas Angelica, c/. Los Pedroches, 34. Zarzaquemada, Leganés (Madrid).








• I started knitting size S of Sunshine in Patons DK and, almost half way through it, I decided that it is definitely too big so I would have to rip. It has been lying around for nearly two months now.



• I also made a Silk and Pearls Cami (from Knitting Lingerie Style) without either silk or pearls in Katia Bahia, which is a hell of yarn but there is no danger that anyone buys it any more since, as I said, it has been discontinued. Well, when I had finished and sewn back and front, I saw that my knitting was irregular, that the upper part for the bust was too big and the top part of the back too loose. So I ripped it all and started again, this time ,in the round, for a more regular appearance (although not regular enough yet) and omitting many of the increases from the waist up. It is better now, but there are still holes where I picked up the stitches for the neckline. Although I like the pattern (with the above mentioned mods for my scarce bust) I do not completely like the result.


• I increased my stash with some more Patons Cotton (DK and 4-ply) bought on line from lovely Ebay Seller Sew Crafty Direct in tomato, kiwi and orchard. For some stange reason, I lately seem very inclined to buy discontinued yarn.

And now some suspense: I will very shortly publish the translation of one of Dodile´s patterns. Enjoy.

SP Hola. Ya llevo casi tres meses sin publicar un post. No es que no hubiera nada que decir, sino que andaba justa de tiempo, sobrecargada de trabajo y me atacó el estrés. En todo este tiempo he podido hacer punto, comprar lana, trabajar, trabajar, trabajar, agobiarme, trabajar e irme de vacaciones para recuperarme.

Por partes:

• En marzo/abril pasados descubrí una tienda de lanas en Leganés (Madrid). Me la enseñó la cuñada de mi cuñada, que vive cerca y el "marío" me llevó en una de nuestras visitas a Madrid. Aunque no tenían todo lo que me interesaba (bambú, por ejemplo), tienen bastante variedad de Katia y Lanas Stop. Compré algunos ovillos de Katia Siesta y Bahia que estaban de oferta porque han dejado de hacerlos (ver fotos). Por si a alguien le interesa, la tienda es Lanas Angélica, c/. Los Pedroches, 34, Zarzaquemada, Leganés.

Empecé a hacer la talla S de Sunshine en algodón Patons DK y, cuando iba más o menos por la mitad decidí que era demasiado grande y que tendría que deshacerlo. Lleva rodando casi un par de meses por ahí.

También me hice la Silk and Pearls Cami (de Knitting Lingerie Style) sin seda ni perlas, sino con Katia Bahia que es un horror de hilo porque se deshace la capa de afuera, pero no hay peligro de que ya nadie la compre por que ya no la hacen. Pues bien, cuando ya había acabado y cosido delantero con espalda ví que el punto era muy irregular, que la parte superior para el pecho era enorme y la espalda quedaba muyyyyy floja. Deshice y volví a empezar, esta vez en redondo (el punto queda más igual) y me salté un puñado de aumentos de cintura para arriba. Ahora está mejor, pero quedan agujeros donde cojí los puntos para la terminación del escote. Aunque me gusta este modelo, el resultado es pscha!

Añadí algo de "munición al arsenal" con más Pattons Cotton (DK y 4-ply), que compré on-line de la amabilísima vendedora de ebay Sew Crafty Direct, en colores tomato, kiwi y orchard. Parece que siento una fatal atracción hacia los hilos descatalogados, ¿verdad?

Y ahora un poco de suspense: dentro de poquísimos días publicaré la traducción de uno de los modelos de Dodile. Hasta pronto.

knitting/punto

Yeah. I am short for words to give this post an appropriate title or even contents. I must say that I've been a bit lazy lately (spring, perhaps) and haven't posted much (ok, not at all). But I have knit a bit and finished a couple of projects.
The first is the V-neck Tunic (from Tahki Stacy Charles) I started last september and put it down as the time came for warmer clothing.
I liked making it since it is easy and allows you for fast knitting.
The second is the Dragon-Skin wrap for my daughter. I have used Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in an orangish shade and 3.5 mm needles. I have made it longer than in the pattern and have narrowed the sleeves. I haven't been able to take a picture of my daughter wearing it, so here is one of the garment on a bed before I knit the cord.

SP. Me faltan las palabras hasta para el título del post. Y es que últimamente ando un poco vaga y a penas he actualizado el blog (¿será la primavera?). Pero sí he hecho algo de punto y he acabado un par de prendas.
La primera es la V-neck Tunic de STC que empecé el pasado Septiembre y había dejado a medias porque ya se acercaba el mal tiempo. Me ha gustado hacerla porque es fácil (punto musgo y elásticos) y se hace rápida.

La segunda es el Dragon-Skin wrap para mi hija. Usé una tonalidad asalmonada de Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino y agujas del 3.5. La he hecho algo más larga que el patrón -dos repeticiones completas del dibujo- y he estrechado algo las mangas. Es un patrón muy interesante aunque, al principio, me costó un poco y tuve que deshacer un delantero entero con su media manga y todo.

Aún no he podido hacerle una foto con él a mi hija, así que pongo una que hice sobre una cama antes de ponerle el cordón para atarlo.

Modelling / Posando

Here is a picture of me modelling the "maglioncino lila", now completely finished--neckline and all. I've also made yet another hat, this time off-white (same yarn as the others) and have started a Dragon-Skin Wrap for my daughter. Yarn: Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, which knits beautifully. I love it.



SPAl fin, una foto mía posando con el "maglioncino lila" de Mani di Fata, ahora ya terminado el escote y todo. Estos días también he hecho otro gorro más, de la misma lana que los otros, pero en crudo. Está recién empezada la chaqueta kimono Dragon-Skin Wrap para mi hija con Baby Cashmerino de Debbie Bliss, una lana que me encanta.

FO/Finito

Juliet is finished. The shell buttons were sewn on this morning and, although it has taken me some time, I am already used to it. I wasn't too happy with the colour at the beginning: I used 7 fifty-gram balls, all of the same dyelot. But if you look closely, you will see that there is only pink and purple with very small streaks of light blue or salmon. The lower part, however, has a lot more of orange and light blue, which made Juliet too colourful, I thought. Now I consider it is OK. I like the result.

Apart from the changes I talked about in the last post, I also ripped the final 3 rows of garter stich and remade them by going down to 5mm needles.

SP He acabado Juliet. Esta mañana he cosido los botones de concha y, aunque me ha llevado un poco de tiempo, ya me he acostumbrado a ella. Al principio no estaba muy convencida del color: he gastado 7 ovillos de 50 gramos de lana, todos de la misma tintada. Pero si os fijais, en la parte de arriba han salido principalmente morado y rosa, con muy pocos toques de azul claro y salmón; y la parte de abajo tiene mucho más naranja y azul claro, lo que hacía una Juliet con mucho colorín. Ahora creo que no está mal.

Aparte de los cambios que mencioné en el post anterior, también acabé deshaciendo las 3 vueltas finales de punto musgo para hacerlas con agujas más finas de 5mm. Queda mejor.

Ripping Juliet / Deshacer a Juliet

Yes. I was almost half way throgh the skirt of Juliet when I tried it on and checked my suspicions. It was too flared. A lot of ruffles, I thought. But I continued knitting with the hope that the weight of a longer garment would make less volume. Tried it on again and, nope, a big bunch of ruffles came out of about the middle of my back giving me the look of a giant hunchback whale. No doubt I was going to rip the whole skirt and tried again. This time I only knit each fourth stitch f&b&f in order to get 21 fewer stitches. Definitely, I think it looks better now.

SP Así es. Ya estaba a mitad de camino con el faldón de Juliet cuando me lo probé sólo para confirmar mis sospechas. Era demasiado acampanado. Con muchos fuelles. Pero seguí tejiendo con la esperanza de que el mismo peso de la prenda redujera el volumen. Me lo probé otra vez, pero no. De mitad de mi espalda salía un puñado de ondas que me hacían parecer una ballena jorobada. Ahora sí que iba a deshacer todo el faldón para volverlo a intentar. Esta vez sólo he tejido tres veces cada cuarto punto para tener 21 menos. Creo que ahora tiene mejor pinta.

Año 2008, post uno / Year 2008, post one

This is the first post the year 2008 has allowed me. So, if this is not too late yet, happy 2008 everyone.

Nevertheless, the title of this post could as well be "Hats, hats, hats" as my brown Robin's Blue Egg Hat has been so successful I had to make another two for Christmas and there are still another three to go. And what's more, everybody wants it brown, so there is little colour on my needles.

I have almost finished my "maglioncino lila" from Mani di Fata. It only lacks the finishing touch around the neck line. The result is not bad, but I would have liked a slightly thinner jumper. I followed the instructions almost word by word but I think it would have been better to make more decreases both for the waist and for the armhole so as to get narrower shoulders. The wool (Stop Reina) has pleased me: it is quite soft, has a lot of mohair (72%) and is much cheaper than, for example, Rowan Kidsilk, although, obviously, this one has polyamid instead of silk. I haven't washed it yet to see if it washes well.

I have just started Juliet, de Sara Johnson y Rachel Bishop with Stop Agata (50gr/65m - 70% wool, 30% acrylic). It is a single ply bulky yarn in gorgeous variegated colours. It is a pleasure to knit with it but it just goes a short way. What you see in the pic is a whole ball. Since I have read in Ravelry that the pattern results in rather big sizes I have gone for size xs and have cast on 16 fewer stitches. I will knit more rounds because I want to get a smaller neckline. I am always cold around the neck.

I guess I sound like a fan of Lanas Stop. This is not exactly the case. The thing is these are the only ones sold in my town. Their bad point is their high content in synthetic materials. Unluckily the shop owner has told me she is going to retire soon and, if nobody takes charge of the shop, there won't be anywhere left to shop for wool. Shopping on line will be the only option. Let's wait and see.

SP Sí, este es el primer post que el año 2008 me permite; así que, aunque sea un poco tarde, feliz 2008 a todas.

No obstante el título podría ser también "Gorros, gorros, gorros" ya que el Robin's Blue Egg Hat, que en este caso es marrón, ha tenido tanto éxito que me encargaron dos más en Navidades y aún me quedan otros tres por hacer. Para colmo todo el mundo lo quiere marrón, así que no hay color en mis agujas para gorros.

Casi he terminado el "maglioncino lila" de Mani di Fata, a falta solamente de la terminación del escote que pensaba haber hecho el fin de semana pasado, pero no hubo tiempo. El resultado no está mal, pero me hubiera gustado un jersey un poco más fino. Seguí las instrucciones casi al pie de la letra y encuentro que hubiera sido mejor hacer más disminuciones para entallar algo más la cintura para dar más forma a la sisa y dejar unos hombros más ajustados. La lana (Stop Reina) sí me ha gustado, es bastante suave, tiene mucho contenido en mohair (el 72%) y sale mucho más barata que, por ejemplo, Rowan Kidsilk, aunque, claro, esta tiene poliamida en vez de seda. No la he lavado todavía. A ver qué tal responde al agua.

Da gusto tejer con ella, pero cunde poco. Lo que veis en la foto es un ovillo entero. Puesto que he leído en Ravelry que el patrón da unas tallas algo grandes, estoy siguiendo la talla xs y he montado 16 puntos menos. Haré alguna vuelta más con el objeto de conseguir un escote más cerrado. Es que tengo un cuello muy friolero.

Supongo que pareceré una forofa de las lanas Stop. No es exacto, pero es que aquí no hay otras. Lo malo que tienen es mucho contenido en material sintético. Por desgracia la dueña dice que se jubilará pronto y, si no traspasa la tienda o algo así, se acabaron las lanas aquí. Sólo nos quedará comprar online. Ya veremos.

I have recently purchased /received a couple of magazines I would like to talk about since they are full ( and I mean FULL) of lovely ideas, patterns, projects.

The first is the Dec 2007 issue of Marie Claire Idées. I have a subscription and this is the story: I had heard from this magazine. Then I saw it being mentioned on the internet, I saw lovely pictures from it and I read opinions in Amazon commenting what wonderful ideas it had, how lovely and attractive its style, how French and chic. Being unable to get one issue I decided to get a subscribtion. Two years better than one, because you get a good reduction that makes the high shipping charges worthwile. It started coming. Yes... it was nice. It was chic. It had ideas. But that's all. They probably weren't my style, if I happen to have any. I don't have a summer house to decorate with makeshift adornments. Yet I enjoyed looking at the pics, stylish as they are. I enjoyed admiring the creativity of the designers in MCI. But a two year subscription... And those people who talked wonders about it, do they put those ideas into practice? There was very little I really wanted to or could put into practice.

This winter issue had made me change my mind completely: there are lots of things I want to make, projects that fit MY style, and techniques that I can handle or learn from scratch. To illustrate all this, I am posting a few of the pictures I like. Have a look and judge.

The secon magazine is Interweave's Knits Holiday Gifts 2007. I wanted to knit the Wyvern/Dragon-Skin Wrap for my daughter, but the mag is sold out at IW, so I had to search the Internet and order it from an on-line seller (at a higher price, of course). But there are quite a few other things I like and would like to make. This is my list:

• the Wyvern/Dragon-Sking Wrap, of course. But the pattern in Holiday Gifts is only for children, and I have also purchased the adult version (pdf instant download) so I can also make one for myself. ;)
• Koolhaas Hat, an authentic piece of knitted architecture which is now also available for download from Interweave On-Line Shop
• Huckleberry Ascot, a scarf worked in short rows,
• December Lights Tam (althought I am a monochromatic knitter),
• Little Green Clutch, so I can use some Tilli Tomas - Disco Lights leftovers from Sahara,
• perhaps, two or three more things.

SP Recientemente han llegado a mis manos un par de revistas sobre las que quiero hablar, porque están llenas (y digo LLENAS) de labores e ideas muy bonitas.
La primera es el número de Diciembre 07 de Marie Claire Idées. Estoy suscrita y esta es la historia: Ya había oído hablar de esta revista. Luego vi que la mencionaban en internet, vi fotos bonitas y leí en Amazon opiniones comentando las magníficas ideas que traía, su estilo atractivo, muy chic, muy francés todo. Puesto que no hay forma fácil de conseguir un ejemplar suelto desde aquí, decidí suscribirme. Mejor dos años que uno, así cada número sale más barato y se rentabilizan los elevados gastos de envío. Empezó a llegar y, si... estaba bien. Era chic. Tenía ideas. Pero eso era todo, ideas. Quizá no fuera de mi estilo, si es que yo tengo de eso. Tampoco tengo una casa de verano que decorar con adornos improvisados. Aún así, me gusta mirar las fotos, muy estilosas ellas. Me gusta admirar la creatividad de los diseñadores de MCI. Pero una suscripción de dos años... Y todos esos que hablaban maravillas de la revista, esos ¿realmente ponen en práctica todas estas ideas? Había pocas cosas que yo quisiera llevar a la práctica.

Este número me ha hecho cambiar completamente de opinión; hay muchas cosas que quiero hacer, projectos que sí son de mi estilo y técnicas que conozco o que puedo aprender desde cero. Para ilustrar todo esto, he puesto arriba unas cuantas fotos que me gustan. Echadles un vistazo y juzgad vosotras.

• La segunda revista es Knits Holiday Gifts 2007 de Interweave. Quería hacer la chaquetita cruzada Wyvern Wrap para mi hija, pero la revista estaba agotada en IW, así que rebusqué por internet para pedirla a algún vendedor on-line (por supuesto, más cara que en IW). Pero hay un puñado de cosas que me gustan y me encantaría hacer. Esta es mi lista:
• el Wyvern o Dragon-Skin Wrap, por supuesto. Pero las explicaciones de la revista son solo para niño, así que también he comprado la versión adulto (puede descargarse el pdf automáticamente) para hacerme uno yo también.
• el gorro Koolhaas, una auténtica obra de arquitectura del punto que también se puede descargar suelta de la tienda on-line de Interweave;
• la bufanda Huckleberry Ascot, trabajada en vueltas cortas;
• el bolsito Little Green Clutch, así podré gastar unas sobras de Disco Lights - Tilli Tomas que me quedaron del Sahara;
• dos o tres cosas más.

Jackie the Ripper II / Jackie la Destripadora II

Well, all terrible things must come to a more or less happy end and here is what happened with the bulky wool after ripping the Scarfless Nomad Hat: this is what I call Ear Toaster, because the seed stitch band is thicker and very warm for the ears. The Robbin's Egg Blue Hat pattern is free from Rachel Iufe's blog . My wool is thicker and, although I cast on 5 fewer stitches than the pattern asks for, I still find the hat a little bit loose. I haven't found a nice big button yet, so, for the moment, I am using a brooch.

At the moment I am casting on for the back of this "maglioncino" from the September/07 issue of Mani di Fata; the front is finished.

SP Bueno, todas las cosas terribles tienen que llegar a un fin más o menos aceptable y esto es lo que pasó con la lana gruesa tras "destripar" el Gorro Nómada Sin-Bufanda de Interweave Knits: este es el que yo llamo Tostadora de Orejas, porque la banda de punto de arroz es más gruesa y calentita para las orejas. El patrón es el de Robbin's Egg Blue Hat que se puede descargar gratis del blog de Rachel Iufe. Como mi lana es más gruesa, monté 5 puntos menos que en el original de Rachel, pero el gorro todavía me queda un pelín flojo para mi gusto. Aún no he encontrado un botón grande que me convenza, así que, por el momento, uso un broche que tenía por ahí.

En estos momentos, acabo de montar los puntos de la espalda del "maglioncino" del número de Septiembre/07 de Mani di Fata; el delantero está terminado.

Here comes Jackie the Ripper / ¡Qué viene Jackie la "destripadora"!

Last friday I started knitting Nomad Hat from Interweave Knits (autumn 2007) without a scarf. I bought a ball of chunky Stop Astún in chocolate brown (100gr/85m) checked my gauge on 5mm. needles just to see it was too big. So I went down to 4mm. and seemed to do the trick. I had almost finished the hat yesterday saturday in lack of the last row and BO, when I tried it on and, omg, it just looked horrible: too big, too shallow (that is, not deep enough to cover my ears or part of them in this freezing weather we're having), and, all in all, too strange. I showed it to Hubby when he returned from taking our daughter to Madrid to see the family and the Christmas preparations and he had a good laugh. I let the hat survive one more day in order to take some pics and show the world my knitting disaster. Then, after discarding the swift idea of using it as a fruit basket, I ripped it completely. BTW, this yarn rips wonderfully fast. Have a good day.

SP Anteayer viernes comencé el Gorro Nómada de Interweave Knits (otoño 2007), pero sin bufanda. Compré un ovillo de lana gruesa Stop Astún en marrón chocolate (100 gr/85m), hice una muestra con agujas del 5 y ví que era demasiado grande. Así que me decidí por las agujas del 4, que iban mucho mejor. Ya casi lo tenía acabado ayer sábado a falta de la última vuelta y cerrar los puntos cuando me lo probé y... era horrible: demasiado grande, poco profundo (no me tapaba ni un poco de las orejas con el frío helador que hace estos días), y, en resumen, muy raro. Se lo enseñé a mi marido cuando llegó de Madrid de llevar a la niña a ver a la familia y las preparaciones navideñas. Se pasó unas buenas risas. Le perdoné al gorro la vida un día más, sólo con el objeto de hacer unas fotos esta mañana de mi fracaso tricotero para enseñárselo al mundo. Hoy, tras descartar una fugaz idea de usarlo de frutero, he acabado con él. Por cierto, esta lana se deshace de miedo. Que paséis buen día.
