Silk Cocoon Cardigan

Another FO. It took me a couple of weeks longer than I had forseen because I had to rip the sleeves. My head is not where it should be and I am making lots of silly mistakes in all areas of life: the one regarding this cardigan is that instead of decreasing where the stockinette st. begins, I increased, and what is the problem if you are knitting both sleeves simultaneously? Right, if you make a mistake you rip twice as much work. In my case, this implied about three days' work. Then the sewing, knitting the ties and weaving in ends took their time, too. But here it is. A bit too small I have to say. I made the 33" size, which is also the exact measure of my bust, but I would have liked it a bit bigger, with positive ease so I can wear it more loose.

MODS Made it about 3cm longer. Apart from that, absolutely no changes. I think the pattern is perfect and easy to follow. It deserves 10/10.

I also loved the yarn (Alpaca Silk from Blue Sky Alpacas), soft, with subtle sheen and lovely drape. I am determined to use it again.

SP Trabajo terminado. Me ha costado un par de semanas más de lo previsto porque tuve que deshacer las mangas. No tengo la cabeza en su sitio últimamente y cometo muchos errores tontos en todos los terrenos de la vida. El que cometí aquí es que en vez de disminuir puntos donde comienza el punto jersey los aumenté. Y ¿qué pasa cuando hacemos las dos mangas al mismo tiempo? Correcto, que si cometemos un error tenemos que deshacer el doble de trabajo. En este caso el trabajo de tres días enteros. Luego las costuras, las nosecuántas pulgadas de los cordones y esconder los cabos también se llevan lo suyo. Pero aquí está. Terminado. Sólo que algo pequeño diría yo. Hice la talla de 33", que es la medida real de mi busto, pero me hubiera gustado algo más grande, con algo de margen para llevarlo más suelto.

MODIFICACIONES El mío es unos 3cm más largo. Aparte de eso nada de nada. Creo que el patrón es perfecto y fácil de seguir. Yo le daría un diez.

Igualmente me ha encantado trabajar con la Alpaca Silk de Blue Sky Alpacas. Suficientemente suave, de tacto agradable y con algo de caída. Estoy decidida a volverla a usar.

Ninna Beret / Silk Cocoon Cardigan

Last week or so I finished a Ninna Beret for my daughter. As she seems to have a rather big head, I went for the big size. It seemed I got good gauge, but it turned out too big, even if you consider downsizing it with an elastic band. I decided it would be easier to finish the beret and leave it as it was --big enough for an adult-- and start a new one. So next time I will cast on a couple fewer stitches for each wedge.

My present project is the Silk Cocoon Cardigan by Connie Chang Chinchio, from the spring/09 issue of IW Knits. I ordered 9 skeins of Blue Sky Alpacas Alpaca Silk from Get Knitted. It took about 4 weeks to come over from England to Spain as, I guess, it was on back order. I chose Amethyst and I love both the yarn and the colour. Some mention it not being soft enough because of the alpaca guard hairs, but I have put it close to my neck and I feel it soft enough. The 50% silk content give it some drape and a beautiful sheen.

So far, I am over with the back and left front. The right front is just started. As I have a one-week holiday next week, I think it will very likely be finished then.

SP La semana pasada o así acabé una boina Ninna que había empezado para mi hija. Como parece tener la cabeza más bien grande, me decidí por la talla mayor. Parecía que la muestra estaba bien pero la boina salió demasiado grande, incluso si consideramos que con la cinta elástica se puede resolver este problema. Decidí que iba a ser más fácil acabar la boina y dejarla como estaba --suficientemente grande como para un adulto-- y comenzar una nueva. Así que con la lana que me queda, lo intentaré de nuevo con un par de puntos menos por cada sección.

En este momento trabajo en el Silk Cocoon Cardigan de Connie Chang Chinchio, del número de primavera 2009 de IW Knits. Pedí 9 madejas de Alpaca Silk de Blue Sky Alpacas en Get Knitted. Tardó unas cuatro semanas en venir desde Inglaterra, porque no estaba disponible en ese momento y supongo que tendrían que pedirla. Pero el servicio fue bueno. Elegí el color Amatista, y al natural es bastante bonito. La lana también es un primor y a mí me parece suficientemente suave como para llevarla pegada al cuerpo a pesar de los pelos más recios de la alpaca, que pican a algunas personas. El 50% de contenido en seda le da suficiente caída y un brillo bonito. Me gusta.

Hasta el momento he acabado la espalda y un delantero. Acabo de empezar el otro y, como tengo una semana de vacaciones de Semana Santa, creo que no tardaré en terminarla.

ON and OFF

Just an update of my december knitting progress.

1.- The DROPS slippers are just finished. I used a ball of Stop Aspen I had bought for a hat, but the colour wasn't very convincing. I went to the shop to find another ball in a contrasting colour but there was nothing left as my lys is closing down this month. Nothing from stash matched, either. So the whole slippers were knit in this dull beige with no option to play with this funny pattern. I have to admit being a bit puzzled as to how to 'mount' the slipper once all its squares were finished. It took me a while to work it out. The second time was much, much faster.They are going to be a Christmas present for my sister. While I am modelling for the picture, I find that they are quite comfortable and very warm.

2.- A DROPS (again) A-shaped cardigan for my daughter, knit in less than 4 balls of Stop Astun is almost over just short of one sleeve, which needs sewing. I still have over one ball left, which may become a matching hat.

3.- An Icarus Shawl (by Miriam Felton) is under way as a present for my mother. This is my second and knit exactly like the first one as my mum often says how much she likes the model, the wool and the colour. Knit in Lace Wool from handpaintedyarn.com yarn on 3.5mm needles.

4.- Not started yet: a hat for a cousin. For this one I will use one of the balls of Stop Astún in off-white that remained after my DROPS A-shaped jacket.

SP Puesta a día de mis progresos tricoteros de diciembre.

1.- Zapatillas de DROPS, recién terminadas. He usado un ovillo de Stop Aspen que compré para un gorro, pero no me llegó a convencer el color. Fuí a por otro ovillo para combinar, pero no quedaba ninguno ya que la tienda cierra este mes y no están reponiendo, claro. Entre las reservas de casa tampoco había nada adecuado así que las hice enteras en este beis tan soso sin posibilidad que jugar con los cuadraditos del patrón. ¡Con lo que me hubiera gustado! Admito que estuve bastante desorientada cuando llegó la hora de "montar" la zapatilla una vez tuve todos los cuadros. Me llevó un rato hasta que resolví el puzle. Pero la segunda vez fue mucho más fápida. Las zapatillas son un regalo de Navidad para mi hermana y, mietras poso con ellas para la foto me estoy dando cuenta de lo cómodas y calentitas que son.

2.- Chaqueta Trapecio de DROPS (otra vez) para mi hija, hecha (la chaqueta, claro) con menos de 4 ovillos de Stop Astún en azul claro. Sólo me queda coserle una manga. Con las sobras le haré un gorro a juego.

3.- El Chal Ícarus (de Miriam Felton) está ya a medias y va a ser un regalo para mi madre. Es el segundo que hago y va a ser exactamente igual, ya que mi madre comenta a menudo lo bonito que es y cómo le gusta el color. Lana Lace Wool de handpaintedyarn.com y agujas de 3.5mm.

4. Sin empezar: un gorro para mi prima. Usaré uno de los ovillos de Stop Astún color crudo que me quedaron de mi anterior chaqueta.

Just off the needles / Calentito

After lying around for about ten days in need of sewing and buttons, the A-shaped cardigan (from DROPS) was finished last week. In fact it is a quick knit in such bulky yarn as Stop Astún (it seems I do not knit with anything else lately). I like wearing it as it is really warm. I made something between xs and s, and knitted it longer. I also made a longer neck for extra warmth. However, I find the cuffs too wide. Too loose. I should have cast on fewer stitches. I might have also been a good idea to knit fronts and back in one piece, but I didn't have such a long circular of 5.5mm, which is what I have done it with.

SP Ha estado por ahí tirada diez días esperando costuras y botones, pero al final acabé la semana pasada la chaqueta trapecio de DROPS. En realidad, se hace enseguida con una lana tan gruesa como es la Stop Astún (parece que últimamente no trabajo con otra cosa, pero por aquí hay poco donde elegir). Es agradable de llevar, y muy calentita. Hice una talla intermedia entre la xs y s y añadí longitud. También agrandé el cuello para que abrigara más. Los puños me quedan algo anchos y muy flojos. Creo que debería haber echado menos puntos. Igualmente, hubier simo buena idea hacer los delanteros y la espalda al mismo tiempo, pero no tengo una aguja de 5.5mm tan larga como para acomodar todos los puntos.

Printed Silk Cardigan

This is my finished Printed Silk Cardigan from Interweave Knits Spring 08. I started it in Katia Siesta, which, I considered, was the perfect yarn for a luxury cardi. However, I hadn't knitted more than a couple of inches, when the first 50gr. ball was over. This is a discontinued yarn that I bought in Madrid and there was hardly any chance of getting any more than the 8 balls I have, so I found another yarn: Stop Ibiza. It has a history since it has been in my stash for about 20 years! but so far I hadn't been able to find a project for it.
I have used under four 100gr. balls on 2.5 and 3mm needles. I cast on fewer stitches than recommended for the smallest size and that was ok for the bust although the lower body was too narrow and I had to stretch it while blocking. Apart from that, the other changes I've made is a knit hem to prevent it from curling like mad, and the fake tubular bind off for the neckband (instead of the recommended sewn BO).

What I have learnt or done for the first time:

• the 3-Stitch One-Row Buttonhole
• tubular CO
• three-needle BO for the shoulders
• sewn bind off (which I finally didn't use)
• fake tubular bind off

If I were to knit another one (which I may, because the pattern is gorgeous), I would

• knit the fronts and back in one piece in order to avoid so much sewing;
• place the last buttonhole in the neckband, not the front band;
• make front bands shorter, may be with short rows, as the tips are a little longer than the rest even though I knitted the 1x1 rib tighter;
• knit the whole front bands together with the rest of the front to avoid sewing;
• pick up fewer stitches for neater neck line. It turned out a bit curly. That's the reason why I chose another way to bind off more tightly;
• CO the stitches for the sleeves on both thinner needles and waste yarn. This border tends to give in a little bit.

SP Esta es mi "Chaqueta de Seda Estampada" del número de Primavera 08 de Interweave Knits. La comencé con Katia Siesta, que me parecía la lana perfecta para una chaqueta de lujo. No obstante, no llevaba ni 5cm cuando se me acabó el primer ovillo. Sólo tengo 8, que compré en Madrid y que ya han dejado de fabricar. Prácticamente imposible hacerse con más. Así que busqué otro hilo: Stop Ibiza. Este tiene su historia porque hará más de 20 años que lo tengo, pero hasta ahora no había encontrado ninguna labor en la que usarlo.

He gastado unos 4 ovillos de 100 gramos y agujas de 2.5 y 3 mm. Monté menos puntos de los recomendados para la talla más pequeña (S) y ha resultado bien para el pecho, pero no para la parte inferior, que quedó algo estrecha y tuve que estirarla en el hormado. Aparte de esto, los cambios han consistido en hacer un dobladillo para que las piezas no se enroscaran como locas, y el falso cierre tubular para la tira del escote (en vez de cerrarlo con aguja de coser, como recomendaba la revista).

Qué he aprendido o practicado por primera vez

• el ojal de tres puntos en una vuelta
• el montado tubular
• el cierre con tres agujas para los hombros
• el cierre cosido ( que al final no usé)
• el falso cierre tubular

Si hiciera esta chaqueta otra vez --lo que no descarto, porque me encanta este modelo--

• haría espalda y delanteros de una pieza;
• colocaría el último ojal en la tira del escote, no en la del delantero;
• haría las tiras de los delanteros más cortas, quizá con vueltas cortas, ya que las puntas cuelgan un poco, aunque intenté hacer los puntos del elástico 1x1 más prietos que el resto;
• haría toda la tira pegada al delantero, para no tener que coserla luego;
• cogería menos puntos para el escote. Me salió demasiado flojo y usé el falso cierre tubular para apretar los puntos un poco más;
• montaría los puntos de la manga con agujas y lana auxiliar bastante más finas. Parece que los puños tienden a abrirse un poco.

This and that ...

Well, Sofia's cardigan wasn't ready in time to be delivered by the Three Wise Men. It nearly did, but in the last moment, I decided I didn't much like the way it was going: I ripped the sleeves (which were nearly complete) and the back and fronts from underarm up. I have to say that it crossed my mind to rip the whole thing. Then, I forgot about it for a couple of days and I am at it again.

SP La chaqueta de Sofía no llegó a tiempo para el día de Reyes. Faltó poco, pero, en el último momento, decidí que no me gustaba mucho el camino que llevaba y deshice las mangas (que estaban casi terminadas), así como la espalda y los delanteros hasta la sisa. Se me pasó por la cabeza deshacela por completo, pero me contuve. Luego, la olvidé un par de días y ahora, he vuelto a trabajar en ella.



The good thing is that I've taught myself to knit a module - yes, only one for the moment. I had seen a scarf in a shop that called my attention. It didn't consist in modules exactly; it was rather done in garter stitch shaped like an arrow. I might have seen modular knitting before in afghans and jackets but had not paid much attention to it since I am more a monochromatic knitter. However, while searching the internet for something that looked a bit like the afore mentioned scarf, I came across some fantastic multicoloured designs and garments. I searched a bit further and found some free patterns -not as many as you can find of other techniques- and books. So I have knitted my first square (whose technique may very well be adapted for a scarf like the one I'd seen) and ordered a book : Modular Knits by Iris Schreier.






SP La buena noticia es que he aprendido a tejer un 'modulo'(¿se dice así?). Ví una bufanda en una tienda que me llamó la atención. No era de módulos, sino más bien de punto musgo y terminaba en punta de flecha. Puede que hubiera visto antes punto modular en mantas o chaquetas, pero nunca le presté mucha atención porque mi punto es generalmente monócromo. Sin embargo, cuando buscaba en internet algo parecido a la susodicha bufanda, encontré preciosos diseños y prendas. Busqué un poco más y encontré algún patrón gratuito -no muchos- y algún libro que finalmente he pedido a Amazon: Modular Knits de Iris Schreier.


My third comment is for the january issue of Mani di Fata. I find the knitting projects a bit disappointing this time. I have to say that I have a love-hate relationship with this magazine. Sometimes, I tell myself that I should stop buying it, but I don't. I find it somewhat expensive considering that I doesn't usually offer the patterns of the embroidery works it shows, neither tells you which number colors of Mouliné cotton have been used. No, you have to buy the pattern and, only then, you will know the rest. You can also buy the pattern (or the whole kit) on-line but, in that case, you will have to order the magazine for the instructions. Most part of it is a catalogue of the shop (Canetta) that also publishes the magazine. Nevertheless, the pictures are BEAUTIFUL and the wonderful projects leave me open-mouthed. I have to say that there is an extra drawback when you order on-line from out of Italy: the Italian post is so expensive, you cannot expect to pay less than 30€ for any order. As for the knitting and crocheted proposals, yes, you will find all the explanations and patterns although the yarn is always Canetta's own. Unfortunately, this month, I don't find any knitted things that fit my style. Pity! Some other day I will take pictures of the material I ordered from them. For the moment, here is this is the present issue cover.


















SP El tercer párrafo de hoy va dedicado al número actual de Mani di Fata. Esta vez las labores de punto me han decepcionado un poco. Tengo que decir que mi relación con esta revista es de amor y odio. A veces, me prometo no volver a comprarla, pero siempre pico. Aunque cuesta igual que otras, me parece algo cara ya que no aparecen los patrones de las labores de bordado ni te dice los números de los colores del algodón Mouliné que se utliza. No, tienes que comprar el patrón y, sólo en ese caso te enterarás del resto. Los patrones y diseños (o los kits completos) se pueden adquirir on-line, pero en ese caso, también hay que comprar el número correspondiente de la revista con las instrucciones, que en buena parte más bien parece un catálogo de Canetta, la tienda que también publica la revista. No obstante, las fotos son impresionantes y las labores me dejan boquiabierta aunque tengo que apuntar un inconveniente más si una hace un pedido desde fuera de Italia: el correo italiano es carísimo y ningún envío cuesta menos de 30€. En cuanto a las labores de punto y ganchillo, estas sí que vienen explicadas (en italiano con traducción al español, si compras la revista en España) aunque la lana, claro está, siempre es de la marca Canetta. Desgraciadamente, este mes, no he encontrado ninguna labor de punto que me atraiga. Aquí está la portado. Otro día subiré fotos del material que les pedí.
