Silk Cocoon Cardigan

Silk cocoon cardigan
Another FO. It took me a couple of weeks longer than I had forseen because I had to rip the sleeves. My head is not where it should be and I am making lots of silly mistakes in all areas of life: the one regarding this cardigan is that instead of decreasing where the stockinette st. begins, I increased, and what is the problem if you are knitting both sleeves simultaneously? Right, if you make a mistake you rip twice as much work. In my case, this implied about three days' work. Then the sewing, knitting the ties and weaving in ends took their time, too. But here it is. A bit too small I have to say. I made the 33" size, which is also the exact measure of my bust, but I would have liked it a bit bigger, with positive ease so I can wear it more loose.

MODS Made it about 3cm longer. Apart from that, absolutely no changes. I think the pattern is perfect and easy to follow. It deserves 10/10.

I also loved the yarn (Alpaca Silk from Blue Sky Alpacas), soft, with subtle sheen and lovely drape. I am determined to use it again.

SP Trabajo terminado.

Estoy decidida a volverla a usar.

Interweave Knits Spring 2009

I have just learnt that the spring 09 issue of Interweave Knits is out. I loooove a lot of its projects, which makes up for my slight disappointment with the winter issue. The problems are: a) I won´t have time to knit everything I like b) I can't wait to get my subscription copy.

In the meantime I will share my selection with you.

The one in the top left is definitely a must for many reasons: I have a soft spot for cross-over, cache-coeur, kimono-style cardigans; that colour is one of my favourites. My husband says I am very likely to love that kind of purple, no matter how beautiful or ugly the item is, but, in this case you will agree that the item is GORGEOUS, won't you? The design is Connie Chang Chinchio's, who has in me an inconditional admirer.

FO: Just Enough Ruffles Scarf/

enough ruffles
Pattern: Just Enough Ruffles from cosmicpluto. It´s funny, easy and the result is great (better than the picture, promise).

Wool: three 50-gram balls of Katia Tibet in blue.

Needles: 4.5mm. Started with straights, because I knit faster with them, and finished with 120cm circs to accommodate the huge amount of stitches you get after the increases. BO with 5mm to give the edge more elasticity.

BTW, I used my brand new set of KnitPicks circulars, which I ordered from Tira del Ovillo after I read this post in los escenarios de tu vida (Luisilla, thanks a lot for the information)
SP Modelo: Just Enough Ruffles de cosmicpluto.

Just off the needles / Calentito

Drops jacket
After lying around for about ten days in need of sewing and buttons, the A-shaped cardigan (from DROPS) was finished last week. In fact it is a quick knit in such bulky yarn as Stop Astún (it seems I do not knit with anything else lately). I like wearing it as it is really warm. I made something between xs and s, and knitted it longer. I also made a longer neck for extra warmth. However, I find the cuffs too wide. Too loose. I should have cast on fewer stitches. I might have also been a good idea to knit fronts and back in one piece, but I didn't have such a long circular of 5.5mm, which is what I have done it with.

Drops jacket

Printed Silk Cardigan

Printed Silk Cardigan

This is my finished Printed Silk Cardigan from Interweave Knits Spring 08. I started it in Katia Siesta, which, I considered, was the perfect yarn for a luxury cardi. However, I hadn't knitted more than a couple of inches, when the first 50gr. ball was over. This is a discontinued yarn that I bought in Madrid and there was hardly any chance of getting any more than the 8 balls I have, so I found another yarn: Stop Ibiza. It has a history since it has been in my stash for about 20 years! but so far I hadn't been able to find a project for it.
I have used under four 100gr. balls on 2.5 and 3mm needles. I cast on fewer stitches than recommended for the smallest size and that was ok for the bust although the lower body was too narrow and I had to stretch it while blocking. Apart from that, the other changes I've made is a knit hem to prevent it from curling like mad, and the fake tubular bind off for the neckband (instead of the recommended sewn BO).

What I have learnt or done for the first time:

  • the 3-Stitch One-Row Buttonhole
  • tubular CO
  • three-needle BO for the shoulders
  • sewn bind off (which I finally didn't use)

If I were to knit another one (which I may, because the pattern is gorgeous), I would

  • knit the fronts and back in one piece in order to avoid so much sewing;
  • place the last buttonhole in the neckband, not the front band;
  • make front bands shorter, may be with short rows, as the tips are a little longer than the rest even though I knitted the 1x1 rib tighter;
  • knit the whole front bands together with the rest of the front to avoid sewing;
  • pick up fewer stitches for neater neck line. It turned out a bit curly. That's the reason why I chose another way to bind off more tightly;
  • CO the stitches for the sleeves on both thinner needles and waste yarn. This border tends to give in a little bit.

Qué he aprendido o practicado por primera vez

  • haría espalda y delanteros de una pieza;
  • colocaría el último ojal en la tira del escote, no en la del delantero;
  • haría las tiras de los delanteros más cortas, quizá con vueltas cortas, ya que las puntas cuelgan un poco, aunque intenté hacer los puntos del elástico 1x1 más prietos que el resto;
  • haría toda la tira pegada al delantero, para no tener que coserla luego;
  • cogería menos puntos para el escote. Me salió demasiado flojo y usé el falso cierre tubular para apretar los puntos un poco más;

Modelling / Posando

maglioncino lila

Here is a picture of me modelling the "maglioncino lila", now completely finished--neckline and all. I've also made yet another hat, this time off-white (same yarn as the others) and have started a Dragon-Skin Wrap for my daughter. Yarn: Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, which knits beautifully. I love it.

FO/Finito

juliet
Juliet is finished. The shell buttons were sewn on this morning and, although it has taken me some time, I am already used to it. I wasn't too happy with the colour at the beginning: I used 7 fifty-gram balls, all of the same dyelot. But if you look closely, you will see that there is only pink and purple with very small streaks of light blue or salmon. The lower part, however, has a lot more of orange and light blue, which made Juliet too colourful, I thought. Now I consider it is OK. I like the result.

Apart from the changes I talked about in the last post, I also ripped the final 3 rows of garter stich and remade them by going down to 5mm needles.

Juliet

SP He acabado Juliet.

Queda mejor.

Ripping Juliet / Deshacer a Juliet

Yes. I was almost half way throgh the skirt of Juliet when I tried it on and checked my suspicions. It was too flared. A lot of ruffles, I thought. But I continued knitting with the hope that the weight of a longer garment would make less volume. Tried it on again and, nope, a big bunch of ruffles came out of about the middle of my back giving me the look of a giant hunchback whale. No doubt I was going to rip the whole skirt and tried again. This time I only knit each fourth stitch f&b&f in order to get 21 fewer stitches. Definitely, I think it looks better now.

Here comes Jackie the Ripper / ¡Qué viene Jackie la "destripadora"!

Last friday I started knitting Nomad Hat from Interweave Knits (autumn 2007) without a scarf. I bought a ball of chunky Stop Astún in chocolate brown (100gr/85m) checked my gauge on 5mm. needles just to see it was too big. So I went down to 4mm. and seemed to do the trick. I had almost finished the hat yesterday saturday in lack of the last row and BO, when I tried it on and, omg, it just looked horrible: too big, too shallow (that is, not deep enough to cover my ears or part of them in this freezing weather we're having), and, all in all, too strange. I showed it to Hubby when he returned from taking our daughter to Madrid to see the family and the Christmas preparations and he had a good laugh. I let the hat survive one more day in order to take some pics and show the world my knitting disaster. Then, after discarding the swift idea of using it as a fruit basket, I ripped it completely. BTW, this yarn rips wonderfully fast. Have a good day.

Yes, here it is: finished and beautiful. It only needs to have those yarn ends hidden, but I couldn't wait to post a picture.
I used the same yarn as for the Swallow Tail--that's why they look pretty much like each other. It is lace wool from handpaintedyarn.com knitted with 3.5mm needles. I just used under one skein as I did some more repeats of all the charts in order to use as much of the yarn as possible. There is no problem in doing as many repetitions as you like as one chart always seems to fit in the next one.

As for blocking, well, contrary to what you may think with that lacy fishbone ending, the edge pattern is straight. I blocked them very tight, but the scallops have almost disappeared.
For a better view, click on image.

However much I admire the wonderful results of blocking a piece of knitted lace, I have to say that I find this stage of the knitting process a pain in the ass. Excuse my vocabulary, but it is to be taken literally, since spending the time necessary to stick all those pins kneeling down on that rug (which, incidentally was woven by my mother-in-law and gave it to my husband) gives my buttocks serious pins-and-needles for several days. It must be that I am not in good shape these days as finding the time and energy for the gym is really difficult for a working mother who also needs some time to knit. You know how relaxing knitting can be when a dark cloud continously lingers over your head, don't you?

blocking swallowtail

The original pattern in French and English can be downloaded free from Dodile´s site.

Dimensiones: 180 x 85 cm.

Montar 3 puntos bastante flojos. Tejer estos tres p del der.
Girar. Tejer 1 der, 1 aum, 1 der, 1 aum, 1 der (total 5p).
Girar. 5 der.
Girar. 2 der, heb, 1der, heb, 2 der (total 7p).
Girar. 2der, 3rev, 2der.
Girar.

On the needles / En curso

So far I have finished the main bodice of the V-tunic in STC Muse I pictured in a previous post. This part is knit using two strands of yarn together and the sheer effect of the lower part is achieved by working with the same needle size and only one strand of yarn.

I have also started the North Roë shawl whose pattern I bought some time ago and which, now, is very generously offered free by its designer, Dodile. She has given me permission to translate it into Spanish and publish it here. The translation is nearly finished and will be here soon. Sorry, Picovoli will still have to wait a little longer.

V Tunic

Nort Roe

I'm still knitting summer/Punto de verano - todavía

Yes, I am still knitting summery things. Although we still have a spell of very good, summer weather, I am conscious that the cold days are just round the corner; that we will need some wintry knits soon and that I won't be able to have them finished on time. However, I have just received some S Charles Muse to knit the V-tunic in the picture and I don't know whether the temperatures will still allow me to wear it once it is finished or it will have to wait in the wardrobe till next summer.

I have also found very good end-of-summer sale at the only one yarn shop nearby: plenty of Eco (cotton and linen ) 50 g balls at 1€ each. I am thinking of getting a few more. But this time I am sure this yarn won't be used till next year.

V-Tunic
Muse S Charles Collezione

Sahara acabado

I've finished Sahara sweater and I am very satisfied with myself and my recently got skills. I love this pattern --the second I knit by Wendy Bernard-- and find it so clever! For me, it is a kind of special challenge to knit a garment from the top down (and this is just my sencond one, the other being Jan Dress), which has many advantages: fewer seams and the possibility of trying it on on the fly and stopping when you have reached the most suitable length. This is also the first time I knit short rows: I had heard of them but never tried them, so I have learnt a new technique that I am very likely to use, especially to knit more sleeves from the top by picking up stitches around the armhole.

In general, the pattern is well written and easier to follow than I thought at the beginning when I saw the four pages full of very small letters. However, there have been a couple of things I didn't completely understand, so I made my own interpretation and saw what happened. The result is good so... For example, "keep edge sts in St st" was a bit confusing. Did I have to purl knit stitches and knit purl stiches? I just knit all of them.

After reading so much about how much it may stretch due both to the featured yarn and the pattern itself, I went for size xs instead of the s, more suitable for me. I used 3 and 3.5 mm needles to get a slightly bigger gauge; followed, however, the number of rows stated for size s, to make it a bit longer; and made more decreases for the capsleeves because, after the first try, the Diamond pattern edge was too loose and flared. I didn't cast off as loosely as adviced around the sleeves and the neckline but tried to get a more elastic shirt-tail hem by binding off this way: k2tog pass resulting st back to left needle, repeat from *.

There is another 'first time' in my Sahara. First time I buy very expensive yarn. I have used two skeins of Tilli Tomas 100% spun silk Pure and Simple, and one of sequined Disco Lights in color Jade. I find most of the colorways exquisite but I am not so sure of its result as the parts I started to knit first already show some pilling and I got my fingers blue while I was working with it so I often had to wash my hands. I am a bit concerned wearing this sweater will stain the rest of my clothes. If you have any ideas about fixing the color, I would appreciate your coments.
Ah, I nearly forget, the sequined yarn is beautiful, but those sequins feel abit itchy around the neckline.

SP He acabado Sahara y estoy realmente satisfecha con mis habilidades recién adquiridas.

Sahara

Just a quick post about my current knitting activity. I am not far from finishing Sahara. The pattern is by Wendy Bernard and sold online at Stitchdiva Studios. Yarn is Tili Thomas' Pure and Simple handspun 100% silk and Disco Lights, color Jade bought at Chez Casuelle. I have to say that the skeins took quite some time to arrive.

I have to rip the edging of one sleeve (it looks too loose) and do the neckline and Sahara will be finished.

Oh, Jan dress / Vestido Oh, Jan

Hi. Here is another finished job. This is the Oh, Jan dress by Knit and Tonic I have knitted for my daughter. I love this intelligent pattern and, since directions for many sizes are given, I won't say I won't knit another one in either the dress or the tunic version.
I used about 2 1/2 balls of Stop Nilo, 100% Cotton (not mercerized) but made some changes to the original, which is completely knit downwards from shoulders to hem. Instead, I started with a provisional Cast On at the underarm and knitted upwards, because I prefer the appearance of the cast off stitches for the underarms and neck shape; grafted the shoulders and then went downwards for the skirt. This makes it easier to stop once you've reached the desired length or you can rip part of it and turn the dress into a tunic one day.

I used 3.5mm needles for the main work and 3mm for the garter stitch hem, which seemed too loose when knitted on the thicker needles.

SP Hola. He aquí otro trabajo terminado.
